Bowing to huge pressure from the anti-smoking campaigners, it is reported that the producers of Dhanush’s upcoming film Mariyaan have decided to delete from the film’s final version sequences depicting Dhanush smoking cigarette.
Adman Bharatbala, who is popular in filmy circles as well, is debuting as director with Dhanush-Parvathi starrer Mariyaan which has music by Bharatbala. Incidentally this is the first time a Dhanush-starrer gets the music of twin Oscar winner A.R. Rahman. Dhanush reportedly plays a fisherman in the film.
The promotional stills of the film showed Dhanush smoking cigarettes. Anbumani, former Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, has strongly objected to sequences showing Dhanush smoking in the film. In a statement, he has said “It’s indeed shocking to note that the makers of Dhanush’s Mariyaan have prominently released photos showing him smoking cigarettes. Showing smoking in advertisements is a punishable act under the law.
“At a time when Rajinikanth has issued an appeal to his fans and others to desist from smoking, it is ironical that his son-in-law features in smoking sequences in films. I appeal to the makers to delete such sequences.” Following Anbumani’s appeal, the makers have now decided to delete the sequences in the film’s final version so as not to court any more controversies leading up to the film’s release in theatres.
